Obituary of Harry Oliver Tuttle, Late of Sheldon, Ia.

Harry Oliver Tuttle passed away Monday morning at ten o’clock at the home of his father in law, Tim Shaffer, on west Ninth street, following a brief illness with tumor on the brain. He was taken ill March 12 and on April 10 he was taken to Rochester, Minnesota, where he underwent an operation on the 13th which gave him some relief, but no hopes were entertained for his recovery. During his illness he was a great sufferer.

He is survived by his wife and son, William S. Tuttle of Chicago and two grandsons; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Stutzman of Britton, South Dakota, and Mrs. Edith Esinlohr of Havanah, North Dakota; and two brothers, William Tuttle of Vallago, California and E. W. Tuttle of Watertown, South Dakota.

Harry Oliver Tuttle, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Tuttle, was born April 19, 1878 at Boyden and passed away May 20, 1935, in Sheldon, at the age of fifty seven years, one month and one day.

He was a Spanish-American War veteran, joining Company E, Iowa National Guard, under Capt. Odel of Hull, and though he did not see active service he was in camp at Chickamaugua, where he contracted malaria fever and was ill for more than a year.

On October 19, 1900, he was united in marriage to Miss Mattie Shaffer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tim Shaffer of Hull, where he was engaged in the barber business, later moving to Boyden. While in Boyden he was a member of the school board. In 1919 the family moved to Matlock where he became cashier in the bank and was also mayor of Matlock, residing there until three years ago when the family moved to Sheldon. He took an active interest in the affairs of the town and was greatly esteemed by all who knew him, and leaves to mourn a host of friends.---Sheldon Ex.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, May 23, at one thirty o’clock at the home and two o’clock from the M. E. church with members of the Masonic order in charge of the services and Rev. F. E. Burgess officiating. He was a member of Mistletoe lodge, No. 376, A.F. and A.M. of Sheldon. A Masonic quartette sang during the services. The Women’s Relief Corp was in charge of the many floral tributes.

Interment was made in East Lawn cemetery with the following as pall bearers: S. Schortinghuis and Arthur Miller of Boyden; John Huibregtse, Clarence Patterson and Charles Long of Matlock; and R. J. Hickman of Archer.

His death certificate adds his usual place of abode as Matlock, Iowa; died at 201 West 9th St., Sheldon, where he had lived 3 years; occupation, bank cashier, 10 years in this occupation, last worked at it in 1929; parents Wilson S. Tuttle and Zac Lanning; informant Wilson S. Tuttle, Chicago, Ill.; died at 10 a.m. May 20, 1935; cause, tumor of cerebellum, onset 1934, attended by Dr. C. A. Samuelson of Sheldon since February 14, 1935.

FiindaGrave.com gives his parents as Wilson Shannon Tuttle (1844-1922) and Zac Lanning Tuttle (1847-1927) and spouse as Martha S. Shaffer Tuttle (1872-1964).

The 1930 U.S. census shows him and Mattie living in Matlock, where he was employed as a collector for a service company.

The 1900 Sioux County marriage register shows groom Harry O. Tuttle, age 23, resident of Boyden, a barber, born in Boyden, parents W. S. Tuttle and Zach Lanning; bride Mattie Shaffer, age 28, resident of Boyden, born in Clayton County, Iowa; parents Timothy Shaffer and Mary Jane Osborne; married by a Methodist Episcopal Church pastor, no date or place of marriage given, but recorded on October 20, 1900.

His World War I draft registration card (September 1918) shows him as age 40, a resident of Boyden, working as a bank cashier, Bank of Matlock; tall, medium build, blue eyes, light hair.
