Joe Vander Schaaf stricken at work, died on Thursday

Funeral services for Joe Vander Schaaf were held Saturday afternoon from the Reformed Church at Sanborn, with the Reverend Haak officiating.

Mr. Vander Schaaf was stricken with severe pain about midafternoon last Wednesday, while working about the farm yard. He was taken to a hospital at Sheldon, and then rushed to a hospital at Rochester, Minnesota, where he passed away shortly after arrival about 1:15 a.m., Thursday, June 14. He was 50 years, three months and three days of age.

Mr. Vander Schaaf was born March 11, 1906 on a farm near Newkirk, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W L. Vander Schaaf.

He was married on March 5, 1936, to Miss Berdena Kleinhesselink, daugher of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Kleinhesselink of Orange City.

To this marriage were born two children, Clifford, 19, now in military service, and LaVonne, 10, at home.

He lived as a young man in the Newkirk vicinity. After marriage he lived on the farm, where he was born for five years, then on a farm southwest of Orange City for three years, and in 1944 moved to a farm two miles south of Sanborn where he resided at the time of his death.

He was a member of the Reformed Church of Sanborn from where the funeral services were held. Burial was made in the Newkirk Cemetery.

Besides the widow and children he is survived by one brother and five sisters. A brother Louis preceded him in death in November, 1954. His mother passed away in 1918 and his father died in 1936.

Surviving brother and sisters are Maggie, Mrs. M. Vande Velde, Sheldon; Bertha, Mrs. George Duistermars, Sioux City; Stuart, Albuquerque, New Mexico; Ella, Mrs. Reuben De Valois, Orange City; Lillian, Mrs. William Top, Orange City; and Kathryn, Mrs. Cornie Van Surksum, Alton.

Pallbearers were Kenneth Vande Velde, Willard D. Top, Edwin Van Surksum, Roger De Valois, Henry Kleinhesselink and Gary Vander Schaaf.
