Alvin L. Porter

Alvin Lee Porter, 61, Rock Valley funeral director, died Monday, Oct. 4, in a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.

Services were at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Pioneer United Methodist Church in Rock Valley. The Revs. William Wingert, David Waterman, Gordon Bloemendaal and Arno Frerichs officiated. Burial was in Richland Cemetery at Inwood under the direction of Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley.

Mr. Porter was born May 31, 1921, at LeMars. He graduated from Inwood High School and the Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago, Ill.

He married Jean Miller Jan. 20, 1945, in Omaha. He established Porter Funeral Home and Porter Furniture Store at Inwood in 1953 and in 1961 established the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.

Mr. Porter was an active charter member of both Inwood and Rock Valley Kiwanis Clubs and served as lieutenant governor of the Northwest Iowa District in 1961. He served as Master of Golden Sheaf in Masonic Lodge, served as mayor of Rock Valley in 1967*; co-founder and administrator of Valley Manor Nursing Home. He was a member of the Shrine Temple, Iowa National Funeral Directors Association and an active member of Pioneer United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Rick of Dallas, Texas, and Randy of Rock Valley; one daughter, Pam Porter of Denver, Colo.; his parents, Jake and Dora Porter of Rock Valley; two brothers, John of Rock Rapids and Stan of Inwood, three sisters, Mrs. Wilson (Rose) Duven of Pella, Mrs. Herman (Dorothy) Moen of Inwood, and Mrs. Don (Alice) Clark of Alma, Kan. and three grandchildren.
