Dowie A. Vander Pol, 87, of Alton, passed away Wednesday, November 2, at the Sioux Center Community Nursing Home.

Dowie was born November 23, 1900 at Alton, the son of Auke Vander Pol and Antje Riendertsma Vander Pol.

On February 20, 1924 he married Bernice Cornelia Van Meeveren at Alton. They farmed near Newkirk for a few years and then moved to a farm north of Alton. In 1957 they retired to Orange City and in 1959 they moved to Alton. Mrs. Vander Pol passed away January 21, 1986 at Rock Valley. In May of 1987 Mr. Vander Pol became a resident of the nursing home. He was a member of the Reformed Church of Alton.

Survivors include his son, Marion of Sioux Center; a daughter, Betty Vrieze of Phoenix, Arizona; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a sister, Bertha Erkes of Sanborn.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by five brothers: Otto, Harry, Nick, Fred, and Mike and a sister, Grace Hoffs.

Funeral services were held Saturday, November 5 at the Reformed Church of Alton with the Reverend Robert Vander Schaaf officiating. Interment followed at Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton, under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home of Orange City.
