Born: November 24, 1894
Died: October 1, 1918

The body of Fred Vander Pol was brought home to Alton and buried in the Nassau Cemetery Thursday afternoon with military honors. The casket bore the words--Died of pneumonia on board ship while crossing to France. Reverend V.D. Naald of Sheldon performed the burial cemetery.

The casket was opened for a short time, the buglar sounded taps and a volley was fired as the coffin was lowered in the grave. Death took place one month before burial.

Thus another one of the heroes of the war passes away. We cannot honor them too greatly.

Note: Fred was the son of Auke and Annie (Rindertsma) Vander Pol and had five brothers; Otto, Harry, Nick, Douwe, and Mike; and two sisters, Grace and Bertha.
