DEATH CLAIMS AUGUST VANDER HAMM

August Vander Hamm, a pioneer of Sioux County, passed away at his home here last Friday following a stroke which he suffered in the preceding Monday.

A short funeral services was held at the home Monday because of the illness of Mrs. Vander Hamm, and at St. Paul’s Church with the Reverend H.W. Kriege, pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in charge. Interment was made in St. John’s Cemetery.

August Vander Hamm, oldest of eight children, was born December 17, 1857, in Dixon County, Illinois. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. He came to Sioux County in 1872. He was united in marriage with Marie Ann Elizabeth Vlotho in Clayton County February 7, 1882. Eight children were born to this union, two of whom Louis and Robert, preceded him in death. The children whom with the wife survived him are Henry of Spencer, South Dakota; Herbert of Ireton; Mrs. George Eilts of Struble; Mrs. Henry Elits of Spencer, South Dakota; Mrs. Fred Jahn of Maurice and Elizabeth at home.

Mr. and Mrs. Vander Hamm observed their 61st wedding anniversary on February 7. Mr. Vander Hamm was a real pioneer of Sioux County and he saw and helped bring about a real garden spot from a prairie country. He endured many hardships in the earlier days. He was always active and prominent in civil, political and church life and held many places of trust and honor, both in Reading Township and Ireton. He retired from active farm life many years ago and came to Ireton to live in a modern home which he built. Mrs. Vander Hamm, who has been ill for some time, has the sympathy of all as do the children. The deceased will be missed as he was a customary figure on the streets of Ireton.
