From the Alton Democrat, February 1, 1935:

George Allen Has Fatal Accident

George F. Allen of Woonsocket, S.D., son of Pat Allen of Alton, was killed at his home Monday, when a 12-gauge shotgun accidentally discharged and shot Mr. Allen just above the heart, bringing instant death. He was about 55 years of age.

When notified of the tragic accident Mrs. Theodore Wagner and Frank Allen left for their brother’s home. Will Allen has since learned the circumstances of his brother’s death in a letter from Mrs. Wagner. He was preparing to move a washing machine and icebox to the home of his daughter and in moving out the icebox from the wall the gun, hanging on the wall, apparently was dislodged and discharged. The drayman who was present but not in the room, heard the shot and found Mr. Allen on the floor.

Funeral services were held Wednesday in the Catholic church in Woonsocket. Mr. Allen is survived by four daughters, all married, and one son who is in school at Sioux Falls. Mrs. Allen passed on about two years ago. He is also survived by his father, three brothers and three sisters: Mrs. Wagner, Frank and Will of Alton; [blurred] Allen of Faulkton, S.D.; Mrs. John Gaffney of Orient, S.D.; and Mrs. Ed Niemeyer of Faulkton, S.D.
