AGED PIONEER PASSES AWAY---JOSHUA WHITNEY DIED HERE IN HOSPITAL

One of the Early Settlers of Sioux County, locating to Washington Township, 52 Years Ago

Joshua Whitney one of the pioneer settlers of Sioux county, passed away about 1 o'clock last Friday afternoon following an illness of several months during which time he failed rapidly. A few weeks ago he was brought from his home to the hospital here where an operation was performed in the hopes of prolonging his life but the disease with which he suffered had so undermined his strength as to preclude the possibility of his recovery, although he maintained a stoical attitude and cheerful spirit until the last.

The remains were taken to his home, about twelve miles southeast of Hawarden, where funeral services were conducted at 2:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon in charge of Reverend J.A. Kottie, paster of the Ireton M.E. Church. Interment was made in the Union Hill Cemetery.

Joshua Whitney was born in the state of New York August 3, 1850, and died in Hawarden August 25, 1922, at the age of 72 years and 22 days.

When a small boy he moved with his parents to Pecatonica, Illinois, and in 1868 moved from there to Jackson County, Iowa. In 1870 he accompanied M. McNally and family to Sioux County and located with them in Washington Township and his home has ever since been in this vicinity.

He was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Fair (Thayer) in 1878 but she passed away about 1895. He was united in marriage secondly with Miss Maude Sturgess in 1897. Two children were born to this latter union. Mrs. Florence Ehlers of Craig and Miss Cora Whitney of Faith, South Dakota, both of whom with the widow were left to mourn a kind and loving father and husband. He is also survived by one, ***************** Mrs. Alfred Santon of Dell Rapids and Mrs. Sally Roberts of Le Mars, and one brother, Jas. Whitney of Adaville.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the beareaved relatives.
