Mrs. Lydia Maud Whitney

Many friends and relatives paid their last respects to Mrs. Maud Whitney, 77, when funeral services were held at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ireton, Monday, August 6, with the Reverend Pittock of Hawarden officiating in the absence of the local pastor, who is on vacation.

Mrs. Whitney died in the Hawarden hospital, August 4, following a long sickness of cancer. She was hospitalized since last February.

Lydia Maud Sturges was born November 24, 1978 at Detroit, Michigan. At the age of three, she moved with her parents to Dell Rapids, South Dakota. When she was 13 years of age, the family moved to Pierre, South Dakota, a distance of 500 miles by covered wagon. She moved to Ireton later, and was baptized and became a member of the Dunkard Church and was a woman of strong Christian Faith.

On July 3, 1896 she was united in marriage with Joshua Whitney of Ireton. Two daughters were born to this union, Cora and Florence. Her husband preceded her in death in 1922. For the past 45 years she has made her home on a farm south of Ireton. She became a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church June 1, 1955.

Survivors include the two daughters, Mrs. Carl Ehlers of Ireton, and Mrs. Harry G. Moses of Seattle, Washington. There also remains two brothers, Harry Sturges of Fusche, South Dakota and George Sturges of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Kellems of Turner, Oregon; one half brother, Mr. Albert Hughes of Ireton; and one half sister, Miss Anna Hughes of Seattle, Washington. One grandaughter Mrs. Leonard Wessels of Seattle, and one great-grandchild, Arnold Wessels of Seattle.

Interment was made in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
