NIC WESTERGARD FUNERAL HELD FEBRUARY 13

Funeral services for Nickolia P. Westergard, 77, who died at the local hospital on Monday, February 10, were held in Trinity Lutheran Church February 13 with Reverend O.F. Pittack officiating. Mrs. William F. Hill served as organist, and the choir sang :Rock of Ages” and “Savior, I Follow On.”

Interment was in Grace Hill Cemetery with Dow Funeral Home in charge. Casket bearers were Fred Westergard, John Barinsky, Jr., Robert Hillrichs, Lowell Hillrichs, Lloyd Van Buskirk and William Van Buskirk.

Mr. Westergard was born June 11, 1891,in Sioux County, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse and Anna (Hoegh) Westergard. On July 5, of that year he was baptized in the Lutheran Church at Ireton by Reverend Grimm.

On April 12, 1908, he was confirmed with Reverend Rehwaldt officiating. On January 21, 1914, he was united in marriage with Helena B. Ronsiek at Ireton, Reverend Schmidt performing the ceremony.

He spent his entire life in the Hawarden vicinity, farming in Washington Township for 40 years. During these years he served as a school board member for 24 years and was overseer of seven new school houses. His engineered the construction of the second building to house the Lutheran Church in Hawarden, and served as church treasurer for five years. He was also a carpenter by trade, and he operated a threshing machine for 35 years. Mr. Westergard retired from farming in 1952 and moved to Chatsworth. In 1963 he moved to Hawarden, where he resided until his death. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden and of the Hawarden Saddie Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, who died September 28, 1950, his parents, one grandson, and one great-grandson.

Survivors include one son, Walter Westergard; four daughters, Mrs. Gladys Waterman and Mrs. Velda Weyen of Hawarden, Mrs. Agnes Green of Ireton and Mrs. Leona Thode of Aurora, Illinois; two grandchildren, Robert Warner and Sharon Thode; three great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; one brother, Chris Westergard of Ireton; three sisters: Anna Van Buskirk of Ireton, Katie Hillrichs of Craig, and Clara Barinsky of Hawarden; several nieces and nephews, and a number of cousins.
