From the Boyden Reporter, August 9, 1934:

Funeral service for one of Boyden’s pioneer businessmen was held at the First Reformed church on Saturday, with Rev. John DeJong in charge. Interment was made in the Boyden cemetery. His obituary follows:

Carl Tott was born in Hanover, Germany on July 14, 1866. He came to the United States with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Tott. They settled at Orange City, at which place he was united in marriage to Johanne Van Den Hull at the age of 21. to this union were born seven children, one dying in infancy named Louisa. The children are: Bertha, Mrs. John Van Der Maaten, of Boyden; John, of Cherokee, Kansas; Anna, Mrs. Henry Auberg, Boyden; George, of Sibley; Wilhelmina Johanna, Mrs. Will Vos, of Boyden; Maggie, Mrs. John Hansen, of Heron Lake, Minn., and fourteen grandchildren. His wife preceded him in death on May 6, 1907.

On August 13, 1913, he was united in marriage to Nan Niewendorp, who with her son, Jake Niewendorp, also live to mourn his death. They resided at Boyden until 15 years ago, moving to Sheldon and then to Rock Rapids, at which place he resided at the time of his death.

He has been ill the past three years and recently undergoing two operations, his condition became gradually worse. He died at St. Vincent’s hospital at Sioux City on the evening of August 2, 1934.

His death certificate has Carl Herman Tott, resident of Sheldon, Iowa; wife Nan Tott; born July 14, 1866 in Germany; parents Geo. Tott and Mary Rosenboom; in the U.S. 50 years; occupation, day laborer, last worked at this occupation spring 1931; died at St. Venaunt[? Vincent?] Hospital, Sioux City, where he had been for 7 days; died at 6:30 p.m. August 2, 1934; cause, cholemia [excess bile in the blood, usually indicative of liver disease], onset June 1934, and cholelithiasis [formation of gallstones], onset 1925; contributory cause, nephritis; a cholelithotomy [surgical removal of gallstone(s)] was performed on June 17, 1934; buried at Boyden.

He does not appear in the Sioux County Cemetery Index. However, there is a FindaGrave.com entry for him, showing him born 14 Jul 1866 in Germany; died 2 Aug 1934 in Sioux City; buried in Sheridan Township Cemetery, Boyden. Parents: Georg Friedrich Conrad Tott (1821-1883) and Aartje Rozeboom Tott (1826-1895); four siblings listed. Married Johanna Van Den Hull on April 14, 1888 in Orange City. Children: Bertha (21 Sep. 1888-20 Feb 1967); John Henry (21 Feb 1891-11 July 1938); Anna (28 Sep 1893-13 April 1961); George (14 Oct 1896-4 Jan 1970); Wilhelmina “Mina” Johanna (14 July 1899-Feb 1978); Margaret “Maggie” (born 9 Oct 1902); Louise (14 April 1906-5 Jan 1907). Married Nannetje (Van Stryland) DeMots on August 13, 1913 in Sioux City.

The Sioux County marriage register for his second marriage shows his wife as Nan Newendorp, maiden name Nan Stryland. Her FindaGrave entry suggests that her later husband was John DeMots.

Census records show Carl's occupation as farmer.
