PIONEER AT ALTON PASSES ON--OPERATED DUBUQUE HOUSE

Mrs. Anton Weidenfeller, who with her husband was one of the early proprietors of the Dubuque House her, died on Armistice Day at her home in Merrill. Her sister, here, Miss Sadie Miller, went to Le Mars to be present at the services and interment was in the local cemetery where, Mr. Weidenfeller and their son are buried.

The Miller family homesteaded near Le Mars in the 1900’s before the settlers began to come to this section, The following is from The Le Mars Sentinel:

Mrs. Mary Weidenfeller, 82, one of the pioneers of Plymouth County, died Thursday, November 11, at her home in Merrill, after a long illness. She had been in failing health the past year and for the last three months had been confined to bed.

Mrs. Weidenfeller wad born July 21, 1861, at Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, and came with her parents when she was five years old to America. Her parents, Christian and Anna (Weidler) Miller, homesteaded land ten miles west of Le Mars and one white family as neighbors. Within the next year a large number of homesteaders settled in that community. At that time there was no railroad at Le Mars, and the Millers arrived from St. Louts, Missouri, at Covington, now South Sioux City, Nebraska. Mary Miller grew up on the homestead and was married to Anton Weldenfeller at St. Joseph’s Church in Le Mars sixty-four years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Weldenfeller, some years after their marriage, lived at Alton for many years where Mr. Weidenfeller was engaged in business. Coming here from Alton he engaged in business in Le Mars for several years and later returned to Merrill.

Mrs. Weidenfeller is survived by one son, John Weidenfeller, of Merrill and one daughter, Mrs. Louis , of Brunswick, Nebraska, three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Sadie Miller of Alton. Mrs. Weidenfeller was a member of St. Mary’s Guild and Alter Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Maynard Eberie, and a son, Edward.

The funeral was held Monday morning at the church of the Assumption in Merrill, Reverend Father Zeno Reising conducting the services and interment was made in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Alton.
