JOHN WILLIAM WALGENBACH PASSES BEYOND--WELL KNOWN FARMER NEAR HOSPERS DIED LAST WEEK--WIDELY KNOWN IN SIOUX COUNTY

John William Walgenbach died at his home near Hospers on Thursday afternoon, September 8 from cancer. Deceased was born in Kwautscheid, Germany, on November 28th, 1860 and came to the United States at ten years of age. He settled for a time at Mendota, Iowa but in 1885 came to Sioux County and in 1887 was married to Miss Susan Moes of Hospers, eldest daughter if Mr. and Mrs. Dominic Moes. They settled in Hospers where the deceased entered the livestock business for himself which he continued for some twenty years. He then entered the employment of the Farmers Co-op Company at Alton as their buyer which he filled competently for two years after which he went to Hospers to take a similar position. He resigned a year ago and retired to life on the farm which Mrs. Walgenbach and sons had been running for seven years.

Mr. Walgenbach was a quiet, unassuming man who counted his friends by his acquaintances. He was a thorough Christian and a member of St. Anthony’s Church at Hospers where his remains were laid to rest in the cemetery Monday morning. The high esteem in which he was held could be plainly seen by the people that came to the house to pay their respects to him. On Sunday evening over 90 cars were parked in the farm yard and his funeral was a large one.

He leaves to mourn his loss his wife and ten loving children, one son having died in infancy. Those living are as follows: Mrs. William P. Gerst of Alton, Mrs. F.A. Beldt of Matlock, Martin of Driver, Saskatchewan, Mrs. Henry Giefer, also of Driver, Miss Elsie of Sioux City, Alfred of Driver, Mrs. William Jacobs of Hospers and Gilbert, Waldmar and Roland at home.

Martin and Mrs. Gieffer and two sons Vernon and Elery came from Canada to attend the funeral. Alfred was unable to come. Mr. Walgenbach will be sadly missed by his family and a host of friends.
