Mr. Leonard Krommendyk, age 93, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2019, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

There will be a funeral service on Friday, July 26, at 10:30am, at the Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Dr. Brian Keepers will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 3:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Leonard was born on September 26, 1925, in Boyden, the son of Henry and Della (Bouma) Krommendyk. When he was a child, his family moved to Ireton, where he attended the Ireton Christian School and Ireton High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and served overseas. After being honorably discharged in 1946, he enrolled at Northwestern Junior College in Orange City and earned his Bachelor’s degree in education from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake.

He married the love of his life, Lorraine De Jong, on December 22, 1948, at the Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. The couple first lived in Maurice, where he was a schoolteacher and coach. In the summer months he attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, working towards his Masters’ degree. In 1960, the couple moved their family to Orange City, where Leonard worked as a teacher, and then served as Postmaster. In 1965, they moved to Edgerton, Minnesota, where he was a school principal, and in 1968, they relocated to Cherokee where he was a teacher and coach. In 1970, they returned to Orange City, and he accepted a position as principal of the MOC Junior High. Following the consolidation of the MOC and Floyd Valley schools, he continued his role in education, working as a teacher, coach, driver’s education instructor, and bus driver. In July of 2016, Leonard moved to Landsmeeer Assisted Living, and later that year he became a resident of the Prairie Ridge Care Center, both in Orange City.

Mr. Krommendyk was a long-time member of the Trinity Reformed Church and the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post in Orange City.

“Doc” or “Mr. Fix It”, as his family called him, enjoyed gardening, fishing, golfing, and bowling. He and Lorraine went on many mission trips, delivered meals on wheels and church bulletins to shut-ins, drove patients to kidney dialysis, and were often in attendance at high school and college sporting and music events.

Those grateful for having shared his life include his wife of more than seventy years, Lorraine, of Orange City; three children, Robert J. Krommendyk, and his wife, Wendy, of Orange City; Barbara K. Kady, of Grand Forks, North Dakota; and Daniel B. Krommendyk, and his wife, Teresa, of Sioux City; ten grandchildren, Abigail Te Velde, Emily Te Velde, Jacob Krommendyk, Billy (Kerri) Krommendyk, Rachel Krommendyk, Annie Krommendyk, Julie Krommendyk, John Kady, Janalle (Shawn) Keown, and Sarah (Nick) Horak; three step-grandchildren, Marcia Te Velde, Mike (Lisa) Te Velde, and Becky Arvilla; sixteen great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; eleven step-great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Disselkoen, of Zeeland, Michigan; a brother, Preston (Carol) Krommendyk, of Fremont, Michigan; four sisters-in-law, Ann Krommendyk, of Dexter, Iowa; Sylvia Krommendyk, of Worthington, Minnesota; Marlys Frerichs, of Le Mars; and Carolyn Scheider, of Austin, Texas; a brother-in-law, Dick Hoogland, of Sioux Center; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, and his wife’s parents, Nelson and Ada De Jong, he was preceded in death by a son, Paul Krommendyk; two daughters, Rhonda Krommendyk; and Lynne, and her husband, Albert Te Velde; a grandson, Brandon Krommendyk; a granddaughter, Tara Krommendyk; two brothers, Bernard Krommendyk, and H. Delmar Krommendyk; two sisters, Jo Ann Hoogland, and Henrietta Blacquiere; and four brothers-in-law, Simon Disselkoen, John Blacquiere, Stanley Frerichs, and Col. Max Scheider.
