THEODORE WAGNER, LIFELONG ALTON RESIDENT DIES, RITES HERE MONDAY

Theodore Wagner, a life long resident of this vicinity, died at his home in Alton Friday, October 30, after an illness of some weeks.

Born May 20, 1876, on the Wagner farm to Mr. and Mrs. Peter J. Wagner, he grew up in this vicinity with a family of nine brothers and sisters. His parents were pioneers, having come to Sioux County by covered wagon in 1869, among the very first settlers. Ted was one of the first white children born near Alton.

February 10. 1902 he married Agnes Allen, daughter of Mr. and Patrick Allen. They were married in Alvord, where he operated a livery for several years. In 1905 they moved to Alton, where they have since resided. Mr. Wagner owned and operated the local livery barn until he brought the Alton Garage in 1916, continuing in this business for a number of years, For the past 16 years he has been night marshal, a position he filled with satisfaction to all over the years. He resigned this summer owing to encroaching years and failing health. For many years he was a member of the Alton Fire Department.

“Ted” Wagner, as he was known affectionately to all, was a quiet man not given to words or boasting, but he was happy in the success of his brilliant daughters and fine son who have been a comfort and joy to their parents. In February 1952, the couple observed their golden wedding at their home here.

He is survived by Mrs. Agnes Wagner, and five children, two sons having died in infancy. The children were here during his illness and for the funeral services Monday, including a Margaret (Mrs. Philip) Law of Chicago, Dr. Loretta (Mrs. Frank B.) Smith of New York; Miss Lillian R. Wagner, Cedar Falls, Iowa; James E. Wagner of Omaha; Miss Phyllis Mary Wagner of Sioux City; two brothers and sisters: Peter Wagner of Sturgis, South Dakota, Mrs. Dan Prendiville, Ralph, South Dakota and Mrs. Leona Juelfs of Wall, South Dakota, Andrew Wagner of Reeder, North Dakota.

Here for the funeral besides the children were Mrs. James Wagner and son Michael of Omaha, Mrs. Prendiville and Andrew Wagner, and Ted Wagner’s nephews. Gerald Allen of Pierre, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Weidenfeller of Le Mars.

Services were held Monday from St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Father Reising officiating at the Requiem Mass. Pallbearers were Cy Kokenge, J.T. Even, Joe Pohlen John Konz, Carl Harriman, and Richard Foreman.

Dinner was served to the family and relatives at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cy Kokenge, neighbors of the Wagners.
