SETTLED HERE EARLY EIGHTIES--MRS. KATE NOORDHOFF SUDDENLY CALLED BEYOND SATURDAY AT HOSPERS

Mrs. Trientje “ Kate” Noordhoff, an early settler of Sioux County, died Saturday at her home at Hospers, the end coming suddenly after an attack of heart trouble. She is survived by eight children, 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Kate Van Akkeren was born in Gronigen, the Netherlands, she came to America at the age of 14, her family settling at Fulton, Illinois. She was married there 62 years ago to Cornelius Tillema, and they came to Sioux County in the early 80’s, settling on a farm near Newkirk which is now farmed by his son Charles Tillema. Mr. and Mrs. Tillema moved to Hospers 29 years ago but the following year Mr. Tillema died. She was married to Mr. Klass Noordhoff in 1905 and they moved to Orange City to make their home, living there until five years ago when they moved back to Hospers. Mr. Noordhoff died nearly three years ago.

The surviving children are as follows: Harry Tillema of Minnesota; Mrs. Ben Wilkens of Sheldon; Mrs. John Hyink, Hospers; Jake Tillema of Castlewood, South Dakota; Mrs. H.E. Woerink, Pipestone, Minnesota; Albert Tillema, Castlewood; William Tillema of Sioux City; Charles Tillema Newkirk.

Funeral services, conducted by Reverend Stegeman, were held Tuesday at the home and First Reformed Church, Hospers. Burial took place at the Newkirk Cemetery. Her life was one of helpfulness to others and the fine family of respected citizens which she raised to man and womanhood attests to the Christian character and sterling worth of the pioneer mother.
