John J. Thorman, pioneer of O’Brien and Sioux Counties, died at his home in Granville Tuesday morning at the age of 72, as the result of a stroke suffered Saturday night.

A Solemn Funeral Mass was sung in St. Joseph’s Church Friday morning at 9:30, with Father Dalhof, Father Hausmann, Father Cullin, and Father Knobbe officiating.

Interment was made in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Pall bearers were Theodore Ney, Joe Horky, Ray Grady, William Schemmel, Jr., Tony Hunt and Edwin Limke, all nephews of Mr. Thorman. Honorary pall bearers were Earl Muehl, Leonard Howard, Art Holles, Joe Goergen, Lloyd Luken and Pat Van Bergen, all members of the Catholic Order of Forresters, of which the deceased was a member.

John Thorman was born in Chicago, the son of Max and Catherine Thorman, on October 9, 1875. At the age of 6, he moved with his parents to O’Brien County, Iowa, where he lived on a farm northeast of Granville until 1941, when he moved to Granville.

He was married to Marie Bussanmus of Bevington, Iowa, on May 16, 1905, at Churchville, Iowa. To this union were born six children: Max, now of Spencer; Julia, Mrs. Ed Feller of Cherokee; Dorothy, Mrs. Theodore Johnson of Paullina; Odelia, Mrs. Art Kohn of Cherokee; Cecelia, Mrs. Robert Schuckman of Lincoln, Nebraska; and John, who was killed while serving with the U.S. Navy at Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 2 brothers and 3 sisters.
