John Theis, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John P. Theis who resides southeast of Hospers, died at the St. Joseph Hospital at Sioux City on Tuesday morning at 6:45 at the age of 21 years, 10 months and 11 days. The direct cause of his death being prerelent meningitis.

Mr. Theis who had been bothered with ear trouble since last fall, had consulted several physicians who advised him to undergo an operation for the removal of his tonsils and adenoids as it appeared that the trouble originated there. He went to Sioux City a week ago Wednesday and had the necessary operation performed and his tonsils and adenoids were removed. On Thursday evening meningitis set in which on Tuesday morning May 23, 1916 claimed his young life.

John Theis was born on August 9, 1894 on a farm near Hospers where his entire life was spent on his fathers farm. He was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Theis and his loss is deeply felt by the parents.

The funeral was held from the St. Anthony Church on Thursday May 23. Father Dries conducting the services. Interment was made in the St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Hospers.

The bereaved parents and relatives have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in this their sudden and sad loss.

A death, which caused sadness in many hearts in the Hospers vicinity occurred Monday, May 22, at St. Joseph's hospital, Sioux City, when John Theis Jr gave up his life and passed to the great beyond. He was 22 years and 10 months of age, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Theis of Hospers, and a farmer by occupation on the home place three and one-half miles southeast of Hospers. An operation for the removal of tonsils and adenoids was performed at the hospital, complications set in, and the doctors then could not save his life. He was one of the best known and popular young men in this neighborhood and was well-liked by all. His parents are known well and favorably all over this section of Sioux county and sympathy with them in their affliction is very great among all of their friends. The funeral was held from St. Anthony's church, Hospers, on Thursday. Rev. Dries officiating. Interment took place at St. Anthony's cemetery. Many friends and relatives from away came to attend the last rites. The deceased is survived by his brothers, Tony and Leo, and his sister, Miss Catherine, as well as by his parents.
