Mr. Duane Vande Griend, age 66, of Hull, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2019, at his residence.

There will be a memorial service on Friday, May 24, at 11:30am, at the Hope Christian Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Loren Kotman and the Rev. Carl Klompien will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. There will be a family prayer service on Friday, at 10:30am, at the Church.

Visitation with the family will be on Thursday from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the CHURCH.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Duane Lee was born on October 12, 1952, in Sioux Center, the son of Edward and Betty (De Wit) Vande Griend. He was raised in rural Boyden and attended the Hull Christian School and graduated from the Western Christian High School in Hull.

On April 5, 1974, he married Aletha Gayle Brummel in Hull. They made their home in the Boyden area for a year before moving to Hull. He helped his parents on the family farm until 1975, when he started working at the Sioux-Preme/Perdue Packing Company in Sioux Center. He worked there until retiring in 2017.

Mr. Vande Griend was a lifelong member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull, where he served as a head usher for many years.

In earlier years, Duane enjoyed playing fast pitch softball for several area teams and participated in a bowling league. He also umped for slow pitch softball for several years and helped organize the Hull Jr. League Baseball Tournament for fifteen years. He enjoyed collecting baseball cards and loved to watch his grandchildren participate in their athletic events.

Survivors include his wife of more than 45 years; three sons, Mick Vande Griend, and his wife, Koty, of Sioux Center; Joe Vande Griend, and his wife, Kim, of Denver, Colorado; and Tyler Vande Griend, of Hull; six grandchildren, Lauren, Joren, and Jack Vande Griend, of Sioux Center; and Ava, Thijs, and Justus Vande Griend, of Denver; his father, Edward Vande Griend, of Arizona; his mother, Betty Vande Griend, of Sioux Center; three brothers and their wives, Doug and Carla Vande Griend, of Salem, Oregon; Rick and Karen Vande Griend, of Woodburn, Oregon; and Randy and Cinda Vande Griend, of Rock Valley; a sister and her husband, Lisa and Bruce Van Aartsen, of Columbia, Maryland; and three brothers-in-law and their wives, Andy and Marilyn Brummel, of Williamsburg, Iowa; Ed and Natalie Brummel, of Sioux Center; and Larry and Maria Brummel, of McGregor, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents-in-law, Albert and Gertrude Brummel.

Memorials may be directed to the Hull Christian School.
