Mrs. Jake Tamminga, 71, of 342 N. Main Avenue, Sioux Center, was killed and her husband, 76, retired bookkeeper, incurred serious injuries in a car-truck collision at Sioux Falls Thursday afternoon, October 16.
Mr. Tamminga is reported to be showing improvement. He underwent surgery on his hip the day following the accident, and remains in the Sioux Valley Hospital at Sioux Falls.
Other passengers in the Tamminga car escaped serious injury, but one, Mrs. Tamminga’s sister, Miss Jessie Zuiderhof of Colton, South Dakota, is confined to Sioux Valley Hospital for treatment. The other passenger, the brother of the two women Jerry Zuiderhof of Colton, was treated for cuts and bruises and then released. The two men were riding in the front seat, with Mr. Tamminga driving, while the two women in the back seat.
Neither of the men in the truck, Holmer and Keith Melhan, both of Sioux Falls, were injured. After the collision, the truck rolled and sheared off some power poles, causing a brief electrical outage in the West Sioux Falls area.
Funeral services for Mrs. Gertrude Tamminga were held at Bethel Christian Reformed Church here at 10:30 A.M. Monday, October 20, with the Reverend Richard DeRidder officiating and burial was made in the Sioux Center Community Cemetery under the direction of Vander Ploeg’s Funeral Home. A family prayer service was held at the funeral home preceding the church services.
Mrs. Gertrude "Gertie" Zeiderhof was born July 28, 1898, in The Netherlands. She was married February 18, 1920 to Jake Tamminga, at Colton.
Survivors besides her husband and sister and brother in Colton include another brother, Louis, of Sheldon; six sons, William of Detroit, Michigan, Albert, James and Joel, all of Grand Rapids, Michigan, George of Cicero, Illinois and Louis of Jenison, Michigan; three daughters: Mrs. Gerrit DeBoer of Rock Valley, Mrs. Wilma Van Leeuwen of Omaha and Mrs. William Decker of Grand Rapids; and 20 grandchildren.
