Alice Swier, 90, of Rock Valley died Saturday, September 30, at the Valley Manor Nursing Home in Rock Valley.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 3, at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley with the Reverend C. Eric Fennema officiating. Interment was in Valley View Cemetery.

Alice Swier was born October 9, 1904, in Sioux Center, the daughter of Fred and Fannie (Portier) De Jong. She married Edward Swier February 17, 1926, at Rock Valley. The couple owned and operated the Swier Garage at Rock Valley until 1952 when they moved to Arizona. In 1959, they moved to Redlands, California. He died December 13, 1982, and she moved to Valley Manor in Rock Valley April 7, 1988.

Survivors include five sons and their wives, Cornelius and Eileen of Fountain Hills, Arizona, Lorance and Rose of Denver, Colorado, Bernard and Carol of Flagstaff, Arizona, Clarence and Vonda of Scottsdale, Arizona and Edward J. Jr. and Lynn of Aztex, New Mexico; five daughters and their husbands, Fannie and Teunis De Joode of Lake Wilson, Minnesota, Gertrude and Gerald Bonestroo of Hull, Viola and Bernard Elgersma of Edgerton, Minnesota, Grace and Cornie Teunissen of Rock Valley, and Ruth and Ken Beukema of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two sisters, Hattie De Jong of Rock Valley and Margaret Kooiker of Madison, South Dakota; 35 grandchildren; 64 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Fred; four brothers, William, Manus, Henry and Herman De Jong; three sisters, Minnie Boogerd, Winnie Visser and Anna Brunsting; and three grandchildren.
