Born: 1878
Died: December 3, 1893

John Strootman, a fifteen year old son of W. Strootman who lives three miles north of Boyden, was shot and almost killed instantly on Sunday of last week. He had just loaded a shotgun and was lifting it by the muzzle. The stock had slipped under a chair and the hammer struck on one of the rounds discharging the gun. The charge took effect in the chest and neck. The carotid artery was severed and the lad bled to death in ten minutes, before the arrival of a doctor.

The funeral services were held in the Reformed Church and were conducted in the Holland language by Reverend T.W. Muilenburg.

We obtained these facts from the Reporter, which also says that the Strootman family was in destitute condition and that the citizens of Boyden contributed liberally to relieve its suffering. Mr. Strootman had some hard luck and in order to meet debts disposed of all his grain and was with out money.
