Andrew Stopfer Jr., for many years a resident of Hawarden, passed away at his home in this city at 8:20 last Friday evening after an immediate illness of brief duration. While Mr. Stopfer had been in gradually failing health for the past two or three years it was not until a few weeks ago the he was obliged to give up his regular work.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Ross Funeral Home with Reverend R.J. Cornell, pastor of the Associated Church, in charge. Burial was made in Grace Hill Cemetery beside his second wife.

Andrew Stopfer Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Stopfer, was one of a family of twelve children. He was born in Union County, Iowa, June 9, 1878, and died in Hawarden December 18, 1931, at the age of 53 years, 6 months and 9 days. He came to Hawarden about 37 years ago from Alexandria, South Dakota, and had been a resident of this city ever since. In 1903 he was united in marriage with Miss Jessie Rundle of Montecello, Iowa, but she passed away in 1908. In 1910 Mr. Stopfer was united in marriage with Mrs. Minnie Austin at Alexandria, South Dakota. His second wife died July 18, 1927. Since that time he has made his home with his step-daughters, Mrs. Bernard Jackson and Miss Alma Austin. The latter, a trained nurse, took care of her step-father during his last illness.

Mr. Stopfer's mother is still living and makes her home in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Eleven brothers and sisters also survive. A sister, Mrs. Conrad Schurz, and a brother, Henry Stopfer, of Ethan, South Dakota, were at his bedside at the time of his death. Mrs. Henry Stopfer and son George were also here and other relatives came for the funeral services.

Although possess of a quiet and unassuming nature and a man who attended strictly to his own affairs, Mr. Stopfer had many friends in this community who held him in high esteem and knew him as a man of the strictest integrity in all his business and social relationships. He had been engaged in various occupations during his long residence here and was faithful to every duty and responsibility. During the past five years he was employed by the government as mail carrier between the postoffice and the railway depots and performed this duty faithfully until compelled by ill health to surrender the duties a few weeks ago. His relatives have the sincere sympathy of many friends in their bereavement.
