Died: January 23, 1884

At the residence of D.R. Horton, Calliope, January 23, 1884, after an immediate illness of about five days, Mrs. Almira R. Stone, wife of Rufus Stone, deceased, and mother of Fred and D.O. Stone.

Mrs. Almira R. Stone was born at Little Hocking, Ohio, May 6th, 1838, daughter of Cummings and Eleanor (Johnson) Porter, was married December 7th, 1856. Two or three years afterwards, they moved to Belpre, Ohio, near Mr. Stone’s old home. In the spring of 1867 they moved to Cherokee, Iowa. In September 1868 they moved to Calliope, and were among the very earliest settlers of Sioux County. In those days of pioneer life trials and hardships sometimes came thick and fast. While in health Mrs. Stone with stood these troubles with that peculiar strength and fortitude known only to woman. Many times, when neighbors were few and the distance between homes was great, has she been made happy by the presence and scalability of friends. And many times has she gladdened the lives of others by her words of cheerfulness and acts of kind assistance.

The sickness which finally led to her death dates from 1874. During the long tedious years which have intervened, she has been almost a constant sufferer. Her disease was very mysterious in its nature, constantly baffling the skill of the best physicians.

Death came at last, and calmly, quietly released the suffer from her pain and we her sons can only say. That perhaps it is not best that we should always have our way. There is a power against which we can not contend. It is well if we have humility to enable us to yield with quiet through sorrowful submission. And now, dear mother, if it be possible that you still exist in that state of intelligence in which you can remember us, we hope your kind regards for us while living may never cease, and we hope that we may ever find highest joy is cherishing the remembrances of a fond, loving and devoted mother.
