Died: August 31, 1906

The many friends of Mrs. Fred P. (Alta) Stone in this vicinity were grieved to learn of her sudden death at her home in Sioux Falls Friday, August 31, from apoplexy. She had spent the summer on a claim west of Chamberlain, South Dakota, and while there was taken with a severe attack, but recovered sufficiently to be brought back to her home at Sioux Falls. She steadily improved and the evening before her death was in better spirits than at any time during her illness. Early Friday morning she was again stricken and passed away in a few hours. The funeral was held in this city Sunday at the home of her mother, Mrs. H.J. McManus, Reverend Chittenden conducting the services. A large concourse of friends followed the remains to Grace Hill Cemetery where they were interred in the family burial ground in a grave beautifully garlanded with flowers.

Of her life the Sioux Falls Press has the following:

Alta Leggett was born in Washington County, Ohio, in 1858. At the age of 14 she came with her parents to Calliope, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood and at the age of 18 was married to Harry Dorsey. In 1885 she was united in marriage to Mr. Fred P. Stone, and four years later with her family removed to Sioux Falls, where she has since resided.

She leaves surviving her, a husband, three children, a little grandson, her mother, and three brothers and three sisters.

Not only her family mourn her lose, but everyone who knew her is plunged into deepest grief, for she was the truest friend, always ready to do for others that which was most helpful --giving her best unhesitatingly. No one whose life hers touched but felt the influence of her goodness and was made better for it and no sacrifice was too great for her to make. She was ever cheerful, bearing the burdens of life and surmounting each obstacle uncomplainingly.
