Mrs. Alvina Steichen, 86, of Alton, died at her home December 9, after a lengthy illness.

She was born October 22, 1893, at Remsen, Iowa and moved to the Alton area in her youth and after her marriage to Theodore Steichen. Her parents were Christian and Anna (Baune) Miller. Her husband passed away on April 8, 1956. She remained on the farm and moved into Alton in 1974.

Mrs. Steichen was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the St. Mary's Guild and also of the Rosary Society. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 12, at 10:30 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Reverend David Hogan officiating. Burial at the parish cemetery with Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen handling arrangements.

Survivors include seven sons: Vernon, Sylvester, Alvin and Milo, all of Alton, Robert of Paullina, Howard of Elgin, Illinois, James of Houston, Texas; six daughters: Mrs. Ted (Nathalia) Schwebach of Alton, Mrs. Orville (Jean) Bahrens of Evansville, Minnesota, Mrs. George (Cathrin) Daum of Paullina, Mrs. Fred (Florence) Stadie of Carpentersville, Illinois, Mrs. Robert (Audrey) Smith of Whatcheer, Iowa, Mrs. Richard (Margie) Lindquist of Dundee, Illinois; 55 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Joe (Loretta) Stoos of Marian, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Theodore; four brothers: Henry, Lawrence, Ted, Clarence; two sisters: Mrs. Fred (Bernadette) Starkenburg, Mrs. Herman (Louise) Mulder, and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers are Keith Bahrens, Russell Kuester, Richard Lindquist, Paul Schwebach, Dale and Larry Steichen.
