Dickerson, Lucille (Mrs. Merle ) 1890-1922

Hawarden Independent of Jun 15, 1922

Wife committed Suicide, Mrs. Merle M. Dickerson took Poison in Denver Hotel.

Mrs. Merle M. Dickerson, wife of a former well known Hawarden boy, committed suicide at her room in a hotel in Denver on Tuesday of last week. They had been married but three months.

The Denver Post contained the following account of the tragedy: "Broken-hearted at the thought of parting from her husband, Mrs. Lucille A. Dickerson; 32 years old, until Monday owner with her husband of the Buckingham hotel, 1540 Washington street, committed suicide by swallowing poison Tuesday in a room at the Albany hotel. "The husband, M. M. Dickerson, told city detectives that his wife had made two trips Tuesday to an attorney's office and had made out a will bequeathing her estate to her sister. He said she was to leave for her former home in St. Paul Monday night but postponed departure, saying she never would leave alive. Coroner Hunter found a bank book showing Mrs. Dickerson had $1,900 on deposit in the United States National bank. In her pocketbook were only 31 cents and a diamond ring. Her husband declared that his wife took poison after sending him from their room at the hotel to order her a tray of food.

When he returned he found her writhing on the bed. " 'I've taken something,' she told him, when he demanded to know what was wrong. At first, he said, she refused to tell him what she had taken, but finally admitted she had swallowed poison. "Dickerson telephoned for a private physician but when the doctor arrived the woman was breathing her last. " The husband said he had accompanied his wife on her second visit to the attorney's office and led the detectives there for an examination of the will.

"Mrs. Dickerson was Lucille A. Hines of St. Paul before her marriage. Dickerson has been connected with hotels in Colorado in various capacities for several years. Coroner Hunter took possession of Mrs. Dickerson's effects after ordering the body removed to the public ……..rest of article is illegible. -
