PASSED AWAY FRIDAY NIGHT AFTER LONG ILLNESS
Was 74 Years Old and Had Lived in Hawarden Over 45 Years. Leaves Widow and Five Children

D. S. Dick, a resident of Hawarden for more than forty-five years, passed away at his home in this city at mid night last Friday following an illness of several months from a heart ailment. He suffered a prolonged siege of illness several years ago and never fully recovered his strength after that experience.

Funeral services were held at 2:30! Tuesday afternoon at the Ross Funeral Home with Rev. T. H. Harding and Rev. J. G. Waterman officiating Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery.

David Schrott Dick, son of Robert and Mary Brown Dick, was born near Ontario, Canada, Dec. 19, 1861, and died in Hawarden Jan, 18, 1936, at the age of 74 years and 30 days. He was the eleventh child in a family of thirteen. They moved to eastern Iowa when he was 5 years old and he was left motherless at the age of 7. His boyhood was spent in Linn and Grundy counties, Iowa, where he received his education.

When 20 years of age he drove overland in a Covered wagon to Dakota Territory and located on a homestead in the vicinity of Huron. There he was united in marriage with Martha L Feige on July 16, 1884.

Five children were born to this union, all of whom survive him. In 1888 the family moved from Huron to Pottawattamie county, Iowa where they remained for two years before coming to reside in Hawarden in 1890. Since that time he has been a permanent resident of this city and was engaged in numerous enterprises. His last business venture was the opera _____(line not legible)____ years which he sold when taken ill early last fall. He was active in city affairs in Hawarden and at one time served as a member of the City Council.

His wife, Martha L. Dick, preceded him in death, passing away in October 1924In 1929 he was united in marriage with Mrs. Gertrude White whose constant and loving care did so much to ease his long period of sickness. Dave Dick was a man of fearless convictions and never lost his zest for living even until the last year. He was "honorable in his business transactions, always energetic and a hard worker, cheerful in the face of adversity, always an optimist, and was esteemed by many friends. He had been affiliated with the Masons, Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias and Modern Woodmen lodges and was a member of the Methodist church.

He leaves to mourn his widow; three sons, Dr. Louis C. Dick, Spencer, S. D.; Klaude D. Dick, Wyoming, Iowa, and Robert W. Dick, Washington, D. C.; and two daughters, Mrs. Oscar Norberg and Mrs. C. E. Anderson of Hawarden. He is also survived by one brother, George S, Dick of Madison, Wis., six grandchildren, and one step-son, Wayne White of Hawar-den. All of the children were here for the funeral.
