From the Sioux Center News, April 27, 1950:

Mr. Henry Van Gorkum passed away very quietly on Thursday morning, April 20 at the home of Mrs. Jennie Miedema after having suffered a stroke. He had been troubled with heart trouble for the last eight years. He was born in Anum, Friesland on May 2, 1864 and had almost reached the age of 82 years. His wife preceded him in death 23 years ago. He is survived by his nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the First Christian Ref. Church with Rev. B. J. Haan in charge and also Rev. J. Breuker who spoke in the Holland language. Burial was in the Ireton cemetery with the following pall bearers: Henry Miedema, Richard Van Donge, William De Vries, Ben Bleyenberg, Gerrit Bleyenberg, Dick Bleyenberg.

Coming here on Saturday from out of town to attend the funeral of Henry Van Gorkum were his relatives Mr. and Mrs. Dick Drost and Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Wynalda of Oglivia [probably Ogilvie], Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Albert Deelstra of Parker, S.D., and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Wynalda of Colton, S.D. Mr. Van Gorkum passed away suddenly Thursday morning after suffering a stroke. He had made his home with Mrs. Jennie Miedema and children for many years.

The separately posted obituary of his wife, Sjoertje (Jenema) Van Gorkum (1870-1927) gives additional information on the couple. She married Hendrik van Gorkum, age 24, son of Petrus Hendriks van Gorkum and Aaltje Luitzens van der Weide, in the Netherlands on 14 May 1892.
