Herman Spaan, pioneer Sioux County settler, died Wednesday afternoon, May 2nd, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C. Van Zyl Jr., at Le Mars, Iowa. Funeral services will be held Saturday at Trinity Reformed Church, Orange City.

Herman Spaan was born at Pella, lowa, December 31, 1862, and came to Sioux County at the age of ten years in 1872 with the first settlers. His parents settled on a farm north of Orange City.

He was married November 14, 1893 to Tryntje Jongewaard. The couple lived on the same farm for 57 years until 1929 when they moved to Orange City. Since the death of Mrs. Spaan on December 9, 1932, Mr. Spaan had made his home with his children, who are, Henry E. Spaan, Paullina; Neal R. Spaan, LeMars; Alfred A. Spaan, Mrs. C. Van Zyl, both of LeMars: Clarence W. Spaan, Kingsley: Mrs. Gilbert Reinders, Orange City.
