Lawrence J. Spieler, 77, of Granville died unexpectedly Monday, May 28, 1990, in St. Anthony’s Hospital in Denver.

Services were held Friday at 10:30 A.M. in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Granville with the Reverend Robert W. Gralapp officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery under the direction of Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen.

Mr. Spieler was born May 13, 1913, rural Granville, the son of Lawrence M. and Anna (Diederich) Spieler. He was raised and educated in the Granville area. He married Martha (Johannes) Jackley February 1, 1955, in Sioux City. The couple farmed near Granville until January 1971 when they retired and moved into town. She died May 31, 1986.

Mr. Spieler was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Catholic Order of Foresters of which he was a past secretary. He was a past mayor of Granville and past director of the American State Bank of Granville.

Survivors include two stepsons, George P. Jackley of Omaha and Ellis Jackley of Cottage Grove, Minnesota; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Robert (Camilla) Degen of Granville; 16 step grandchildren; 27 step great-grandchildren; two step great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Frank Spieler of Granville; four sisters, Mrs. Ray (Cora) Mich of San Mateo, California, Mrs. Al (Rose) Schemmel of Marshalltown, Mrs. Carl (Mary) Nelson of Denver and Mrs. Lloyd (Martha) Luken of Nekoosa, Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by a stepson, Mervin Jackley; three brothers, Jake, Martin “Abe” and Joe and two sisters, Mrs. Mrs. George (Catherine) Schneider and Miss Ann Spieler.
