DEATH CLAIMS A. W. DE MOULIN
Passed Away at Hudson Hospital on Tuesday of Last Week

A. W. DeMoulin of Hudson, also well known in the vicinity north of Hawarden, passed away at the Hudson hospital Tuesday afternoon, October 10th. He had been ailing and on Saturday preceding his death when his condition became serious he was removed to the Hudson hospital but very little could be done for him and he passed away three days later.

Funeral services were held from the Sioux Valley Funeral home at Hudson last Thursday afternoon and burial was at Hudson.

Albert W. DeMoulin was born June 24, 1885, near Harvel, Ill., and so was some past 54 years of age at the time of his death. He was united in marriage February 3, 1909, at Canton to Miss May Green of St. Louis, Mo. Following their marriage they lived on a farm between Hawarden and Hudson until 1918 when Mr. and Mrs. DeMoulin moved to Hudson and for the past 21 years have resided there. For a time after he moved to Hudson he was in business.

He is survived by his wife, two brothers, Will C. DeMoulin, Pipestone, Minn., and Asa O. DeMoulin, East St. Louis, Ill., and one sister, Mrs. F. M. Robertson, East St. Louis, Ill.

The following obituary was originally identified as having come from the Hawarden Independent, October 12, 1939. However, it was not located in that edition of the Independent, and its source is unknown.

Albert W. DeMoulin of Hudson, died in the hospital at that place Tuesday afternoon, where he had been taken for treatment on Saturday. He was born near Harval, Illinois, on June 24, 1885, being 54 years, 3 months and 17 days old.

On February 3, 1909, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Green of St. Louis, Missouri, the ceremony being performed at Canton, South Dakota. At that time he was farming one of the Dawson farms in Virginia township, Union County, South Dakota, northwest of Hawarden. He continued on that farm until January, 1918, when he and his wife moved to Hudson, where they have since lived. He engaged in business in Hudson for a time, but at the time of his death had retired from active work.

He is survived by his wife and two brothers, Will C. DeMoulin of Pipestone, Minnesota, and Asa O. DeMoulin of East St. Louis, Illinois and one sister, Mrs. F. M. Robertson of East St. Louis, Illinois.

RESEARCH NOTES

Despite the fact that both obituaries call him Albert W. DeMoulin, all other sources call him Alfred.

The South Dakota Death Index has Alfred W. DeMoulin, died 10 Oct 1939 in Lincoln County, South Dakota. FiindaGrave.com has Alfred W. DeMoulin, 1885-1939, buried in Eden Cemetery, Hudson, Lincoln County, with a photo of his headstone; no family information.

The 1910 U.S. census shows Alfred W. Moulin (25) and wife May (26) farming in Virginia Township, Union County, SD. In 1920 Alfred W. (37) and Mae E. (36) DeMoulin are living in Hudson, where he owns his home and runs a bowling alley. In 1930 Alfred W. (44) and Mae E. (42) DeMoulin are still living in Hudson, where he works as a trucker. The online index to the 1935 South Dakota state census has Alfred W. Demoulin, age 51, married 1909, spouse name Green, living in Eden, postoffice Hudson, SD.

His World War I draft registration card (Sept. 1918) has Alfred W. DeMoulin, age 36, resident of Hudson, Lincoln County, S.D.; born June 24, 1882; works as a laborer for Arthur Larson and farmers of vicinity; wife Mae E. DeMoulin; tall, medium build, brown eyes, dark hair.

The South Dakota marriage register on Ancestry.com shows groom Alfred W. De Manlin[sic], age 25, resident of Alcester, Union County, SD; bride May E. Green, age 26, resident of St. Louis, Missouri; married February 3, 1909.

(His widow Mae was still in Hudson in the 1940 census, and died in Lincoln County on 18 September 1958.)
