Died: June 6, 1956

Nicholas Sol, or “Nick” as he was known to his hundreds of friends here, died June 6 at the Orange City Hospital where he was a patient for four weeks. He had been in ill health for many months. He had not reached his 79th birthday.

Born in Chicago, Illinois September 14, 1877, he was the fifth of six children born to John and Tryntje (Rep) Sol. His parents had come from the Netherlands six years before his birth and settled in Chicago.

At the age of ten years, Nicholas moved with his parents and family to a farm five miles northeast of Alton. At the age of 18 he joined his brother on a farm near Alton and five years later they moved to a farm in southern Minnesota near Leota.

In 1908 he returned to Alton and started a dray business, which he operated until his retirement. In 1912 he was married to Miss Lena Nieuwendorp of Alton. Two sons were born to the couple, Kenneth and Earl. The latter was killed in a tragic car collision 34 years ago at the age of five years.

After retiring to his pleasant home in southeast Alton, Mr. Sol did extensive gardening, in which he took great enjoyment and pride. He specialized in strawberries and tomato plants.

Surviving are his wife, Lena and son, Kenneth Sol of Sibley and three granddaughters, Beverly, Patricia and Marilyn Sol, all of Sibley; and one sister, Mrs. Kate Nieuwenhuis of Garvin, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his son, Earl, one brother and three sisters.

Funeral services were held at the Van Etten Funeral Home and at two o’clock at the First Reformed Church in Alton, the Reverend LeRoy Sandee officiating. He was a faithful member of his church and a devoted family man.

Pallbearers were Gerrit Roghair, Casey Huisman, E.J. Roelfson, Richard Cambier, George Eilks, and Sam Klein.
