E. J. Scholten Dies at Sheldon, Rites Here Sat. P.M.

Evert J. Scholten, a native of this vicinity, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, June 18, at the Holland Home in Sheldon, where he was a resident.

Mr. Scholten was born 81 years ago, July 8th, 1876 on the parental, Dirk Scholten, homestead south of Alton. He married Nellie Cambier and three children were born to the couple: Clara, Mrs. Gerrit Geurink of Orange City; Esther, Mrs. Arthur McCarthy of Tacoma, Wash.; and Kenneth of Bellflower, Calif., who survive their father, together with five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Others surviving are one sister, Mrs. J. C. Cambier, of Alton, two brothers: Dr. Dick of Kalamazoo, Mich. and Bert of Holland, Mich.

Mrs. Scholten died some years ago and later Mr. Scholten moved to a farm near Sheldon. He married Jennie Douma, who preceded him in death 7 or 8 years ago.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 in the Reformed church here.

Funeral Held for Evert Scholten, 80, Saturday at Alton

Evert J. Scholten, a native of Alton, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dirk Scholten, died in the Pioneer Home at Orange City, Tuesday afternoon, June 18. Mr. Scholten, apparently in about usual health, passed away of a heart attack while taking his afternoon nap. He would have been 81 years of age had he lived until July 8.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the Alton Reformed church with Rev. Sandee officiating. Interment was at Nassau township cemetery.

Mr. Scholten was married to Nellie Cambier, who died in 1930. Three children were born to this union: Clara (Mrs. Gerrit) Geurink of Orange City, Esther (Mrs. Arthur) McCarthy of Tacoma, Wash., and Kenneth of Bellflower, Calif. He is also survived by five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Others surviving are one sister, Mrs. J. C. Cambier of Alton; two brothers, Dr. Dick Scholten of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Bert Scholten of Holland, Mich.

Among those from a distance attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Scholten of Bellflower, Calif., Mrs. Arthur McCarthy and daughter of Tacoma, Wash., and Mr. and Mrs. Orville Cambier of Clarion. Also, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gunnink of Edgerton, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Henry Koerselman of Hull, Mr. and Mrs. John Dokter, Ben Koerselman, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Koerselman and Mrs. Henry Scholten of Boyden, Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Koerselman of Sheldon and Mr. and Mrs. Nick Slaeger of Hull and Mr. and Mrs. L. Miller and Mrs. Ver Hoef of Paullina.

A brief note about his death and funeral services, also saying that he died in the Pioneer Home at Orange City, was also published in the Sioux Center News, July 4, 1957.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Scholten, Evert J., b. 1886, d. 1957, ss Nellie C., Nassau Twp. Cem, Alton IA.

His FindaGrave.com page has him as Evert Jan. Scholten, with a photo of the joint headstone of him and wife Nellie C. It also says he died at Orange City. Parents Derk Jan Scholten (1841-1902) and Grada Johanna Koerselman Scholten (1844-1939); 4 siblings listed; wives Nellie Marie Cambier Scholten (1877-1930) and Jennie De Jong Douma (1881-1948, married 1934).

His World War I draft registration card (at age 42) gives his occupation as farmer, residence Alton; tall, medium build, blue eyes, brown hair. He signs it Evert John Scholten.
