Mrs. A.R. Scott, a pioneer resident of this community, passed away about noon Tuesday at the Hawarden hospital, following a lingering illness from a complication of diseases. Mrs. Scott submitted to a major operation a year ago last March and for a time enjoyed better health but the operation was only a temporary relief. When it became known that her condition was critical she was removed to the hospital some over three weeks ago in order that she might have the best of care and she grew weaker gradually until death came as a sweet release from her intense suffering of the past months.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 this afternoon at the Associated Church with Reverend T.H. Harding in charge. Interment will be made in Grace Hill Cemetery.

Ella May Whalen, daughter of Charles and Lois Whalen, was born in Black Hawk County, Iowa, near Waterloo, October 7, 1869, and passed away in Hawarden June 14, 1938, having attained the age of 68 years, 8 months and 7 days. At the age of three years she came to Sioux County with her parents, who homesteaded about eight miles southeast of Hawarden. Here she grew to young womanhood and received her education. She was united in marriage with Adam R. Scott at Elk Point October 7, 1890, and to this union eight children were born, two of whom preceded her in death. One child died in infancy and Mrs. Charles Boyer passed away in California March 16, 1932. Mrs. Scott spent two years with her daughter in California and was with her at the time of her death. The children who with the husband survive her are Ray Scott and Mrs. Gertrude D'Ry of Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Helen Holliday of Phoenix, Arizona; Harry Scott of Bullhead, South Dakota, and Mrs. Lois Utech and Robert Scott of Hawarden. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Gertrude Elliott of Los Angeles, and 13 grandchildren.

When it became known that Mrs. Scott's condition was critical her two daughters, Mrs. Holliday and Mrs. D'Ry, came and have been at the bedside of their mother during the past three weeks. Her sister, Mrs. Elliott of Los Angeles, also came and was with her until last week when she returned home. During her long illness before going to the hospital she was tenderly cared for by her daughter, Mrs. Utech, who did everything possible to ease her suffering.

Mrs. Scott possessed a most jovial and cheerful disposition and made friends easily and held them throughout her entire life in this community. She was a loyal friend and in her home was a mont indulgent mother. No sacrifice was too great for her to make for her children and their welfare was ever her uppermost thought. She was well rewarded for her kindness as in her last days her children did all that could humanly be done for her. She bore her illness with the greatest of fortitude, never complaining and ever grateful to those who attended her. Her passing will be mourned by many outside the family circle.
