LAST RITES HELD FOR ADAM SCOTT

A.R. Scott of Glenham, South Dakota, an early settler of the Hawarden community, passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City Saturday evening. He had been in poor health for some time and when it became known that his condition was serious he came to Hawarden and later taken to Sioux City.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon at the Associated Church with Reverend Noel P. Orcutt in charge. Interment was in Grace Hill Cemetery.

Members of the Masonic Lodge attended the service in a body and were in charge of the services at the grave.

Adam Robert "Ad" Scott, second son of Adam and Jane Scott, was born on the Scott homestead in Union County, southwest of Hawarden, December 15, 1871, and passed away April 22, 1944, in Sioux City, at the age of 72 years, 4 months and 7 days. He received his education in the rural schools and later the University of South Dakota at Vermillion.

He was united in marriage with Ella May Whalen on October 7, 1891, and to this union were born eight children. One daughter died in infancy and another, Mrs. Genevieve Boyer, passed away on March 16, 1932. He was also preceded in death by his wife, who passed away on June 14, 1938.

He is survived by six children: Raymond Scott of San Francisco, California; Mrs. Helen Holliday of Phoenix, Arizona; Harry Scott of Bullhead, South Dakota; Mrs. Gertrude D’Ry of Burbank, California and Mrs. Lois Utech and Robert Scott of Hawarden. He is also survived by three brothers: Walter and Herbert Scott of Hawarden and William Scott of Hecla, South Dakota.

For several years after his marriage, Mr. Scott was in the livestock business with his father and brothers. In 1910, he went to Glenham, South Dakota to carry on both livestock buying and ranching.

When a young man, Mr. Scott joined the local Masonic Lodge.
