MILITARY RITES FOR SERGEANT JOHN SCOBLIC TO BE HELD AT ALTON

Mrs. Edythe Mae Scoblic, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Gerst of Alton, was notified last week of the death of her husband, Staff Sergeant John R. Scoblic, in the crash of a helicopter last Thursday near the U.S. Naval Air Station at Atsugi, Japan. Two other men were killed of which have not yet been learned here.

He is also survived by his daughter, Ann Michelle, who will be two years old in November, and by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Scoblic Sr., of Norfolk, Virginia. His wife and daughter have been making their home at the Christ. Gerst home near Alton since the sergeant left last winter for overseas duty in the far east.

Sergeant Scoblic was born November 13, 1933, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in March, 1951. He was a career man and already had over 12 years of service. In about eight years he would have been eligible for retirement. On August 6, 1960, he married Miss Edythe Mae Gerst at Arlington, Virginia. She had also served in the Marine Corps.

The sergeant was a veteran of Korea and was on shipboard off Cuba last year during the Cuban crisis. He specialized in photography until August, 1957, when he took a course in helicopter maintenance.

The Fisch Funeral Home at Remsen is in charge of funeral arrangements. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery at Alton. Members of the sergeant’s family are expected to arrive from Virginia when the date of the last rites becomes definite.

A Marine captain was in Alton from Omaha Tuesday and is arranging to have Marine pallbearers, Marine firing squad and color guard when the last rites for Sergeant Scoblic are held at Alton. The date is not yet definite.
