From the Hawarden Independent, April 18, 2002:

David K. Haggar, M.D., 85, died April 8, 2002 at his home in Phoenix, Ariz. Memorial services were held in Phoenix.

David Haggar was born Nov. 1, 1916 in Sioux Falls to Kalil and Sadie Haggar. He graduated from the South Dakota State College of Pharmacy in 1938, graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 1943, and interned at Hurley Hospital in Flint, Mich. He served as an Army medical officer in England and Europe from 1943 to 1946. Upon his discharge, he served residencies in medicine and surgery at People’s Hospital in Akron, Ohio.

He practiced in Hawarden for 10 years as a proverbial country doctor who sometimes rode railroad handcars to visit farms and accepted payments of chickens and sweet corn. He had been a family practice physician in Phoenix since 1959. He was active on the staff at John C. Lincoln and Phoenix Baptist Hospitals.

He was a fellow in the American Academy of Family Practice, was a member of the Maricopa County Medical Association, the Phoenix Country Club and the El Zaribah Shrine. After retiring, he volunteered at the St. Vincent de Paul dining room.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Esther; daughter, Barbara Haggar Brant of Phoenix; son Douglas of Anchorage, Alaska; and brother Donald of Sioux Falls.
