RITES SATURDAY AT GRANVILLE FOR JOSEPH SCHUVER OF ALTON

Joe Schuver, 68, prominent retired farmer of the Granville-Alton vicinity, died at his home Tuesday morning, April 7th at about 9:15 after a long illness. He had been confined to bed for a week and appeared to be gradually failing but passed away unexpectedly while asleep.

Joseph Conrad Schuver was born March 5, 1891 in Alsace Lorraine, France and came to the United States June 19, 1908 with his parents and family, who settled on a farm near Granville. He married Eleanore Oberbroeckling January 11, 1927 at Luxembourg, Iowa. The couple lived on a farm southwest of Granville until 5 years ago when they retired and moved to Alton.

Surviving with the widow are five children--three daughters and two sons, namely Mrs. Leroy (Lorraine) of Alton; Walter of Granville; 1st Lt. Rudolph in service in Germany; Mrs. Marvin Wiederholt (Agnes) of Verdi, Minnesota and Mrs. Martin Gaul Jr. (Irene) of Le Mars; two brothers, Peter of Remsen and Anton of Granville; and 15 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, A2c Henry, one sister, Lena and two brothers, John and Nick.

His son Henry was lost October 10, 1956 with 58 other Air Force personnel from the Lincoln, Nebraska Air Base in a Navy transport plane which crashed off the Azores, enroute back to Lincoln after a three months mission in England. The search for the missing plane was one of the mot extensive ever organized but a missing landing wheel was the only trace found. Of the 2,000 men from the Lincoln Base on the mission, all others were returned safely.

Funeral services have been tentatively at 10 o’clock at St. Joseph Church, Granville, pending news from Lt. Rudolph, for whom an emergency leave has been requested.

Arrangements have been made with Fisch Funeral Directors to have the body at St. Mary’s Chapel in Alton Thursday afternoon and evening, when Rosary will be said at 3:00 P.M. and again in the evening.

On Friday in St. Joseph parish hall at Granville there will also be Rosary at 3:00 in the afternoon, followed by a wake in the evening.

Mr. Schuver was a successful farmer, a quiet but well informed man, devoted to his family and a kind neighbor.
