From the Alton Democrat, May 12, 1933, Hull news:

J. J. Dykstra received the sad news Saturday of the death of his brother-in-law. Mr. Philip Oden of Springfield, S.D. Mr. Oden died from a stroke of paralysis. He was well known in this vicinity as he formerly lived at Sioux Center. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Springfield.

Philip Odens, ruim 68 jaar, is Zaterdagavond overleden. Hij was dienzelfden dag nog in Springfield. Hij werd geboren in Hanover, Duitschland. In 1879 kwam hij in Sioux Co. aan en huwde twee jaar daarna met 'n dochtor van Jurian Dykstra. Van Doon kwamen zij hier. Het huwelijk werd gezegend met 10 kinderen, allen nog in leven behalve de oudste, die 8 maanden oud overleed. De oudste dochter, Mrs. A. Reseeuw woont in Todd Co. Al de andere kinderen wo¬nen hier. Niettegenstaande het siechte weer kwamen vele familieleden van Minnesota en Iowa om den overledene de laatste eer te bewijzen.

TRANSLATION:

Philip Odens, over 68 years old, passed away Saturday night. He was in Springfield that same day. He was born in Hanover, Germany. In 1879 he arrived in Sioux County, and two years later married a daughter of Jurian Dykstra. From Doon they came here. The marriage was blessed with 10 children, all still living except the oldest, who died at 8 months old. The oldest daughter, Mrs. A. Reseeuw, lives in Todd County. All of the other children are here. Notwithstanding the bad weather, many relatives from Minnesota and Iowa came to pay their last respects to the deceased.

There is a photo of his headstone, on which his name is Philip J. Odens. Parents: Boldewyn Odens (1838-1917) and Wendelke Janssen Muller Odens (1842-1884). Spouse: Corneliske Dykstra Odens (1873-1969, married 1892). 8 children listed: Wenno (1894-1895), Jerry (1896-1970), Boldewyn (1897-1984), Sadies Risseeuw (1900-1984), Annie Tjeerdsma (1904-1979), Joe (1910-1958), Ode (1913-1993), and Hessel (1916-1989).

A baptism record on Ancestry.com shows him as Philipp Jurgens Odens, born 9 Oct 1864 and baptised 29 Oct 1864 in Hannover, Germany.

The 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 U.S. censuses show him farming in Bonhomme County, S.D.; immigrated in 1879; naturalized.
