From the Rock Valley Bee, May 5, 1933:

DEATH OF FORMER RESIDENT

The following is an account of the death of John Muhlhausen, a former resident of Rock Valley vicinity, and owner of a farm southwest of town, who died at the home of his son, Carl, at Maquoketa, Iowa. The account is taken from the Maquoketa Sentinel.

John Muhlhausen, 64, passed away Sunday evening, April 23, at 6:00 o’clock at the home of his son, Carl, 109 East Maple street, in this city, following a long illness. For many months he had been in failing health, and on March 17 went to Clinton to consult a specialist regarding his health and there learned that no permanent relief could be obtained. For the past month he had been confined to his bed. His intense suffering the past months was endured with great patience.

John Mulhausen was born in Wandling, Schleswig, Germany, on January 31, 1869, a son of Carl and Elizabeth Bretthour [Bretthaus?] Muhlhausen. On May 11, 1887, he left the old home and sailed for America, coming direct to Iowa, where he located in the vicinity of Maquoketa. On May 25, 1887, he took up farming near Elwood and continued in this occupation for fourteen years.

On March 5, 1902, he was married to Ellen A. Parkinson, and to this union one son, Carl, was born. His wife preceded him in death in 1922. In 1916 he retired from the farm and since that time has been a resident of Maquoketa with the exception of four years residence in Dubuque, returning to Maquoketa in October, 1932, where he had since resided with his son and family.

Mr. Muhlhausen was a member of Jackson lodge No. 33 and Maquoketa Encampment No. 104, I.O.O.F.; Pope Rebekah lodge No. 136; Camp No. 161, Modern Woodmen of America; and Peerless lodge No. 60, Knights of Pythias. He was very much interested in the lodge work and took active part as long as his health permitted.

He is survived by his son, Carl, and two grandchildren, Phyllis Anne and Carl, Jr., of Maquoketa; two sisters, Mrs. Anne Andersen of Marion, Iowa, Mrs. Mary Olmen of Minneapolis, Minn., and several nieces and nephews. One brother, Peter Muhlhausen, preceded him in death April 21, one year ago.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 o’clock Wednesday at Buchners chapel, Rev. C. Edward Holyoke, pastor of the Reformed church, officiating. Burial will be made in the Union cemetery, south of town.
