PIONEER RESIDENT OF DOON DIES AT RAPIDS HOSPITAL

On Thursday morning, October 16, Josephine Schultz, pioneer resident of Doon and Lyon County passed away, after a brief illness.

Josephine Schultz, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Paul Schultz, was born at Oshkosh, Wisconsin, April 19, 1875. When a young lady, she moved to Cherokee, Iowa, with her family where she lived for many years.

She attended college at Cedar Falls, Iowa, for two years where she trained for a teacher and taught school for over thirty-five years. She taught at Cherokee, Iowa, and later in 1898 when her family moved to Doon, she taught in Doon Public and Lyon County, rural schools.

Josephine, all her life was interested in art and music. She was considered a talented musician and did a great deal of choir work.

One brother, Theodore, of Duluth, Minnesota and twelve nieces and nephews survive--besides her parents, two sisters, Amanda of Denver, Colorado and Mary of Berkley, California and one brother, Walter, of Doon preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held at 8:30 Saturday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alvord with Father Eisenbacker officiating at Mass. The pallbearers were John Keegan, Ben Van Lent, Emmet Rogers, George Van Axken, Mat Conner and Mike Allen.

Her brother was unable to attend the funeral because of serious illness. Two nieces, Mrs. Harold K. Fuller of Lincoln, Nebraska and Miss Frances Schultz of Des Moines, were home to attend the last rites.
