RITES MONDAY AT GRANVILLE FOR JOSEPH SCHUMACHER, 79

The Granville community was shocked Friday by the passing of Joseph Schumacher, 79, Granville’s oldest business man from a heart attack. His death took place without warning in his home December 28th at 5:30 P.M.

Joseph Schumacher was born March 17, 1877 at Kaundorf, Luxembourg, son of Nick and Anna Schumacher. He came to the United States in 1902 to Shelby County, where he worked for a short time before coming to Granville the same year.

He opened a blacksmith shop at Granville in partnership with the late Matt Goergen. Later they dissolved partnership and Mr. Schumacher owned and operated the shop until 1947 when his sons Joe and Ambrose took over. However, he continued active and was at the shop every day.

Mr. Schumacher was a member of the St. Joseph Church choir for many years, until 1944, served a term on the town council and was a member of the Luxemburgher Brotherhood of America.

In 1909 he made a trip to his homeland and was married at Kaundorf to Anna Meyers September 29, 1909. He brought his bride to Granville and the couple became parents of 14 children of whom 12 survive with their mother.

The children are Nick of Sioux City; Joe Jr. of Granville; Jeanette, Mrs. Earl A. Kiehl of Sioux City; Clara, Mrs. Joe Harling of Woodland, California; Martin; Susan, Mrs. Sylvester Myerchin; John P.; Herbert; all of Sioux City; Mary Ann, Mrs. Fred Els of Woodland, California; Martha, Mrs. Emil Bader of Sacramento, California; Raphael of Marshall, Minnesota; Ambrose of Granville.

Also surviving are a brother, Nick Schumacher of Alton and 28 grandchildren. Two daughters, Cecelia and Laura preceded their father in death.

Funeral services were held Monday morning, December 31, at 9:30. Reverend George Schumacher of Kingsley, a nephew, officiated at the Requiem Mass, assisted by St. Joseph High School choir. Pallbearers were nephews: Joe N., Norbert and Leo Goergen of Granville; Oscar Schumacher of Alton; Peter Schumacher of Le Mars and Tony Schumacher of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Interment was in the parish cemetery.
