FORMER RESIDENT DIED SUDDENLY

Mrs. A. J. Buffington, a former resident of this vicinity, died suddenly Saturday night of heart failure. Mrs. Buffington was as well as usual during the day and Saturday evening the family went to the Christmas exercises at Holland, Minn. They lived south of that place. On their way home, Mrs. Buffington passed away without a word of warning. She is survived by her husband and eleven children, besides other relatives.

The Buffington family lived in Rock Valley vicinity for a number of years, before moving to Minnesota about twenty years ago, and they will be remembered by many of our people.

Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church at Pipestone, Minn., Tuesday afternoon.

Heart Trouble Fatal to Mrs. A. J. Buffington

Mrs. A. J. Buffington, a resident of Orange township, passed away early Christmas morning, following a heart attack. Accompanied by members of her family she had attended a Christmas program at the church in Holland Saturday evening and later went to the home of a daughter, Mrs. Marvin Beyers, where they had a Christmas tree and social time. Mrs. Buffington had appeared to be feeling well but succumbed to a heart attack while returning to her home. For the past five years she had been subject to heart attacks.

Sara Ethel Stengel was born in Dubuque County, Iowa, November 13, 1869. In 1892 she was united in marriage to Andrew J. Buffington. They moved to a farm near Woodstock in 1914, and since 1921 had resided in Orange township.

Relatives left to mourn her death are her husband and twelve children: Mrs. Rose Oakland, Canton, S.D.; Mrs. Flossie Kirby and Mrs. Gladys Ripley, Pipestone; Mrs. Hazel Buckholz, Mrs. Elva Whittaker, Mrs. Vera Arrowsmith, Mrs. Faye Beyers, Holland; Simon of Pipestone; Harold and Clarence, at Holland; and Donald and Louis at home.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the home, and 2:00 o’clock at the Presbyterian church in Pipestone, conducted by Rev. E. L. Jones. Two hymns, “Rock of Ages” and “Somewhere a Voice is Calling,” were sung by Mrs. Mary Brown and Miss Mary Robson, with Mrs. John Gray, accompanist.

Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery and the pall-bearers were T. E. Kirby, C. Whitaker, Ed Beyers, Herman H. Meier, John Quinn and Henry Brecker.

The Minnesota Death Certificates Index has Sara Ethel (Stengel) Buffington, died 25 Dec. 1932 in Pipestone County. Certif. no. 011491. The death certificate adds her father’s name, Louis Stengel, born in Germany; died at 11 p.m. December 25, 1932; cause, coronary thrombosis, died suddenly in an automobile.

The Sioux County marriage register for 1882 has groom A. J. Buffington, age 26, farmer, Rock Valley, born in Marion County, Iowa, parents S. W. Buffington and Mary M. Awtry; bride Sarah E. Stengel, age 22, resident of Rock Valley, born in Dubuque County, Iowa, parents All Stengel and Mary Bloom; married in Orange City, March 2, 1892.
