Born: July 30, 1866
Died: March 17, 1940

The late John Rohde was born on the 30th day of July, 1866, in Oppwin Province. Hannover, Germany. He soon was brought to Christ in Holy Baptism. Having reached legal age he went to the public school of his home village when 15 years old, his pastor confirmed him. After his confirmation he learned the carpenter trade and remained in the old country until he was 18 years old.

In 1884 he immigrated to the United States and stayed one year in New York. The next year he went westward and came to Hull, Iowa, where he was engaged for seven years in the carpentry.

On November 7, 1889, he joined hands in holy wedlock with Miss Emma Meyn, which union was blessed with the following children: Marie, now Mrs. John Luetjens; Henry Rhode and Minnie, now Mrs. Henry Stegeman.

In 1892 he brought a farm a few miles Northwest of Boyden where he remained till 1913. As a retired farmer he moved to Boyden and lived in his residence till he passed away. Ill health, plagued with asthma, forced him to give up active farming and he left the farm in the hands of his son Henry. He has built many homes and barns in this vicinity, but for the last 14 years has given up all hard work to spend the evening of his life in quietness and rest.

On November 7, 1939 he celebrated his golden wedding anniversary. Hard hearing has bothered him for many years, which was the cause of his not attending divine services as he wished to do. Nether less, although he would not hear what was said in the church, he made his appearance several times during the year and regularly desired and received the Lord’s Supper twice a year.

John Rohde has been a member of the Boyden Church since 1901, always cheerful and willing to do his part. For quite a while he has been troubled with the old evil--asthma and a weakened heart several times brought him near to the brink of death, but his strong constitution overcame the attacks. Recently, however, the disease got worse. He had to consult the doctor but although they brought temporary relief, could not keep him alive because God in His wise providence called him unto Himself.

On Palm Sunday, March 17, at 4:45 P.M., he passed away and left to mourn his loss a bereaved wife, who faithfully had taken care of him together with the help of her children; the a fore mentioned children, 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and one sister, who lives in Hamburg, Germany. He reached the age of 73 years, 8 months and four days. May he rest in peace.
