Mrs. Rosemary Harman, age 73, of Hull, passed away on Friday, November 2, 2018, at Whispering Heights in Rock Valley.

There will be a funeral service on Friday, November 9, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Kevin Yurk will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the church, Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Rosemary Jane was born on June 15, 1945, in the Hull Hospital, the daughter of Douwie Edward and Catharina Sophia Maria (Drewes) Smit. She was raised on a farm two miles northwest of Hull, where she attended the Lincoln Township No. 3 country school. She also attended the Boyden-Hull Community High School, Northwestern College in Orange City, and Westmar College in Le Mars.

On October 23, 1964, she married Lester Elroy Harman at the American Reformed Church in Hull. They first lived on the Harman family farm near Boyden. In 1969, they settled on the Smit family farm northwest of Hull. In the fall of 2012, they moved into Hull. Lester passed away on March 23, 2018, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, after more than 53 years of marriage.

Rosemary was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she played in the bell choir. She was also a lifetime member of the Iowa State and National Education Associations.

In addition to being a homemaker, she taught classes at the Boyden-Hull Schools for over thirty years.

Mrs. Harman enjoyed substitute teaching in retirement, watching her grandchildren participate in sporting events, and traveling, especially on family vacations and fishing trips. Her hobbies included scrapbooking and watching birds on her feeders, particularly cardinals.

Survivors include her two sons and their wives, Michael and Rebecca (Draayer) Harman, of Hull; and Steven and Jessica (Sandbulte) Harman, of Rock Rapids; her daughter and her husband, Stacey and Dennis Schmidt, of Hull; seven grandchildren, Katlyn, Dylan, and Jackson Harman; Avery and Cael Harman; and Lane and Jonathan Schmidt; a sister and her husband, Eileen and Marvin Boon, of Hull; and a sister-in-law, Arlene (Harman) De Jong, of Orange City.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by Lester’s parents, Howard Wesley and Wilhelmina (Van Roekel) Harman, and a brother-in-law, Raymond De Jong.

Memorials may be directed to the Boyden-Hull Scholarship Fund.
