From the Sioux Center News, January 15, 1931:

Eleven Month Old Baby Dies at Hull

The baby son of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Van Surksum of Hull, died on the way to Rochester last Saturday. The baby had been very ill with pneumonia for over two weeks. As a final attempt to save the child the doctor was going to take him to Rochester, Minn., where special equipment for pneumonia could be used. The child died before they reached Sheldon.

From the Sioux County Index (Hull), January 16, 1931:

Mourn Death of Baby Son Buried Here Tuesday Last

The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. J. VanSurksum died on Saturday, after an illness of two weeks, due to pneumonia. The funeral was held on Tuesday in the First Reformed church. A large number of mourning relatives and friends were present. Burial was in Hope cemetery, Hull, Iowa.

From the Alton Democrat, January 16, 1930, Hull news:

Mr. and Mrs. Jake Van Surksum mourn the loss of their nine months old baby boy who died last Saturday afternoon. The baby was in the Hull hospital for a week suffering with infection of the spleen and lungs, and as a last resort decided to take the child to Rochester, Minn. They were accompanied by Gt. Van Surksum and wife and were just entering Sheldon when the baby passed away.

His death certificate has John Marven Van Surksum, born March 15, 1930 in Hull; parents Jake Van Surksum, born in Orange City, and Henrietta Leusink, born in Hull; died at 1:45 p.m. on January 10, 1931; causes, lobar pneumonia, onset 12/16/1930, and “med. abscess,” onset 1-5-1931.
