Johannes "Joe" Rexwinkel, pioneer Alton resident and prominent citizen, died at the age of 97 years, 6 months and 24 days at the Ver Doorn Nursing Home, Ashton, July 17.

Mr. Rexwinkel came to this vicinity in 1873 at the age of 11 years with his late parents in a caravan or covered wagons. He was born December 24, 1861 in Fondulac County, Wisconsin. His marriage to Susan Kuyper November 18, 1885 was performed by the late Reverend Warnshuis, first pastor of the First Reformed Church here.

The couple farmed for many years 1 1/2 miles west of Alton and later moved to Alton. Mrs. Rexwinkel preceded him in death January 8 of this year. A son died in infancy.

Surviving are two children, Mrs. Dena Muyskens and John Rexwinkel both of Orange City; 7 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Herman Riedeman of Alton.

He served his community, church and county well over a long period of years, as secretary of the school board, Sunday school teacher and superintendent and consistory member of the Alton Reformed Church, township clerk and county supervisor, to which offices he was reelected again and again and where his good judgment was highly valued.

He was a genial and kindly nature, with the courage and stamina inbred by those early years of hardship, when there was so much privation among the first settlers.

Funeral services at the Alton Reformed Church July 20 were conducted by Reverend John Maassen of Michigan, with Van Etten Funeral Service in charge and interment was in Nassau Township Cemetery west of Alton.
