Born: May 27, 1853
Died: November 7, 1915

Our deceased brother in Christ, Barthold Reyelts, son of the late Johan Peter Reyelts and his wife Katharina Magdalene nee Haack, was born the 27th of May, 1953 at Neuhaeuserdeich, Hanover, Germany and there also baptized in the name of the triune God on the 12th of June in the same year. He was confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Nauhaus at Easter, 1867.

The deceased was married on the 25th day of May 1879 with Miss Betty Anna Lemmel. They first lived at Bulsdoef, and afterwards at Nauhaus in the old country for the first year of their married life. They had nine children, four sons, and five daughters, of whom four children were born to them in Germany, one dying there in infancy.

On the 15th of June 1887, they moved to America, and arrived at Baltimore, Maryland, the 29th of June. They came to Boyden on the 3rd of July, and after having lived at different places for a short time they purchased their own farm in Sheridan Township, Sioux County, Iowa, where until they moved on the 1st of March 1889, making their home there for the rest of the life of the deceased. Mr. Reyelts and his wife made a visiting journey to the old country in 1906. He and his family were good standing members of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran congregation in Lincoln Township, Sioux County, taking a deep interest in the welfare of the church. The deceased served as secretary of our congregation for good many years, and for a short time also as its president.

Mr. Reyelts, having been of good health in former years, became more or less suffering since 1908. About four years ago Bright’s disease took hold of him; two years ago, becoming more suffering, he consulted Dr. Hermann and Weise in Sioux City, who, after a careful examination, declared thy could not give much hope for total recovery, but gave some medicine for his relief. Since 1st of August of this year he was confined to the bed, only at certain times he could be up a little. At his dear church he was seen last in the afternoon of our last missionary festival; though he could attend the service only with pain, he was glad to have been present. During the last six weeks he had to suffer a very great deal. His hearty wish to be present at the communion table on Reformation Day and to participate in the Lord’s Supper, was not fulfilled, but the good Lord strengthened his immortal soul on the sick bed by his holy word; the old beautiful songs of his dear Lutheran Church, as “A mighty fortress in Our God” “O Sacred Heart, Now Wounded” and others were his delight, and he sung them during many sleepless nights. He died very peacefully on the early morning on November 7th, and as we hope, departed to the better dwellings in the heavenly mansions, which Christ the Saviors opened for all his believers by his most precious blood. He attained an age of 62 years, 5 months and 11 days.

The mourning survivors are his wife Betty nee Lemmel; his three sons William, Herman, and John, his daughters, Mrs. Sophia Hennch, Mrs. Bertha Henning, Mrs. Johanna Rehm, Mrs. Marie Winter and Miss Wilhelmine Reyelts, his sons-in-law August Hensch, Rud Henning, Paul Rehm, William Winter; his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Hazel Reyelts nee Allen, 10 grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. May he rest in peace and the eternal light shine upon him.

The funeral services were held at the home, church, and graveyard last Wednesday, November 10th at 1 P.M., by P.J. Bunge. Through the weather was disagreeable, a great many friends of the bereaved family attended. The funeral sermon was held about St. John 12,26. The pallbearers were Messrs. Aug. and Henry Soehl, J. Henry Schuett, Jacob Tiedemann, H. B. Reyelts and Henry Breuer.
