From the Rock Valley Bee, December 5, 1930:

CLAUD C. LEMON DIED LAST THURSDAY MORNING

Rock Valley relatives of Claud C. Lemon received a message last Thursday morning advising them of his death which occurred at a hospital in Hamilton, Ohio, where the Lemon family has resided for several years. Mr. Lemon died following a second operation for appendicitis. He lived in Rock Valley about eighteen years ago and will be remembered by many people here.

Mr. Lemon is a son-in-law of Mrs. J. W. Jacobs, who with her daughter, Miss Ethel Jacobs, of Sioux Falls, were called to Hamilton a few days earlier by his serious illness. Besides other relatives, [he] leaves his wife, who will be remembered here as Miss Ruth Jacobs, and two children.

Funeral services were held Monday at Holland, Mich., the former home of the deceased.

Family tree information on Ancestry.com has Klaas Claude Lemmen, born 21 April 1893 in Allegan County, Michigan; parents Gerrit Lemmen (1855-1936) and Wilhelmina H. Van Zanten (1857-1944); spouse Ruth Francis Jacobs (1893-1968); children John Jacobs Lemmen (1916-1986) and Shirley Claudine Lemmen (1920-1997); buried in Graafschap Cemetery, Holland, Ottawa County, Michigan. His daughter Shirley was born in Sheldon, Iowa. Much of this information is also on FindaGrave.com, where he is listed as Claud Lemmen, with a photo of his headstone.

His wife is buried in Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley, listed as Lemon, Ruth (Jacobs). Her obituary (posted separately) says she grew up in Rock Valley, married Claud Lemon who died in 1930, and has two children, son John and an unnamed daughter.

The Sioux County Index of 24 March 1916, Rock Valley news, reports Mrs. John Jacobs returning home from Harvey, Ill., where her daughter Ruth was married to Claud Lemon. Mr. Lemon was employed for a time in Foppe’s Pioneer Store in Rock Valley. In March 1918 the family moved from Grand Rapids to Rock Valley (Rock Valley Bee, March 8, 1918), and lived there and in South Dakota for a couple of years (various Rock Valley Bee news notes).

The 1920 U.S. Census shows the family living in Sheldon: Claude C. Lemmon (age 27), born in Michigan, working as a traveling salesman; wife Ruth (26), born in Minnesota; son John J. (3), born in Michigan.

The 1930 U.S. Census shows the family living in Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio: Claude Lemon (38), married at age 24, an engineer for a furnace company; wife Ruth (36), married at age 22; son John J. (13); daughter Shirley C. (10, born in Iowa); and mother-in-law Matie L. Jacobs (68, widowed).
